Columbines
This week I will be talking about one of my favorite flowers. . Columbine or Aquilegia is a must if you like hummingbirds. The light, airy foliage can be used in floral bouquets. The plant is a rounded, clumped plant that produces flowers from the center of the plant. The blooms range in many colors: purple, pink, white, yellow, and blue. The hummingbirds love to feed from them because they are broad at the tip and tubular at the base where the nectar gathers. You need to leave a few seed pods so the plant can self-seed. Deadheading encourages repeat blooming. The blooms are usually 2-toned. The foliage is nice throughout the summer months. In the fall, cut the plants to the ground after a frost. Looks great in a woodland garden or rock garden. Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained, moist soil. My Columbines have just opened up this weekend. This is a perennial plant.
